Accredited Employer Work Visa

A clear guide to how the AEWV works and what you need to apply

The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is New Zealand’s main temporary work visa for skilled migrants who have a job offer from an accredited employer.

Introduced to simplify the hiring process and strengthen worker protections, the AEWV combines several previous work visa categories into a single system. It operates through three connected steps: employer accreditation, a job check, and the migrant’s visa application.

Each step must be completed successfully before a worker can apply for an AEWV.

ACCREDITED EMPLOYER WORK VISA (AEWV) – FAQ

It forms part of a three-step process:

  • Employer Accreditation
  • Job Check
  • Accredited Employer Work Visa application

Only once the employer has passed accreditation and the role has been approved through a Job Check can a migrant apply for the AEWV.

The visa is usually granted for up to three or five years, depending on the role, wage rate, and skill level.

  • You have a full-time job offer (at least 30 hours per week) from an accredited New Zealand employer
  • The role has passed the Job Check process
  • The job is paid at or above the market rate for that occupation
  • You are suitably qualified and meet the minimum skills threshold
  • You meet health and character requirements

Some occupations also require registration or licensing in New Zealand.

The employer provides this token to the migrant worker, and it must be entered when submitting the AEWV application.

  • Work only for the accredited employer and role listed on the visa
  • Partners and dependent children to apply for associated visas (subject to eligibility)
  • A potential pathway to residence if the role is on the Green List or meets wage thresholds
  • Changing employers or roles usually requires a new Job Check and a variation or new visa application.
  • The role is incorrectly matched to an ANZSCO occupation
  • The wage does not meet the market rate
  • Documentation is incomplete or inconsistent
  • Employer accreditation or compliance issues arise
FOCUS TIPIncorrect ANZSCO classification and wage alignment are among the most common reasons AEWV applications are delayed or declined.
