Character Waivers - Visa Matters

Character Waivers

Overcoming Past Convictions or Immigration History

Every person applying for a visa needs to meet character requirements or be approved a character waiver.

If you have a criminal record, have provided false or misleading information in a previous visa application, or have other issues that affect your character, you may still be able to secure a visa through a character waiver.

INZ applies strict standards when assessing if someone is of “good character,” and any red flags can result in a visa decline unless a waiver is granted.

Who Needs a Character Waiver?

You may need a waiver if:

  • You have criminal convictions
  • You have been charged with a crime
  • You provided false information to immigration authorities in a previous visa application

What INZ Considers

  • The type and seriousness of the offence
  • The time passed since the incident
  • Any evidence of rehabilitation or changed behaviour
  • Your reasons for travelling to, or remaining in, New Zealand
  • Your ties to New Zealand, including family, work, and community
  • Your explanation for any false or misleading information you provided to INZ, or any information you withheld from INZ in a previous visa application.

What to Provide

  • Court records or police reports
  • Letters of support from family and friends
  • Evidence of stable employment, community service, or education
  • A personal statement showing remorse and insight
  • Evidence of rehabilitation, if relevant
