Parent Boost Visitor Visa New Zealand: Eligibility, Requirements, and Expert Help

The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is a new long-term visitor visa category launched by Immigration New Zealand. It provides an exciting opportunity for New Zealand citizens and residents to bring their parents to live with them for extended periods. However, this visa comes with specific eligibility criteria and important health-related conditions that must be carefully understood.

What is the Parent Boost Visitor Visa?

The Parent Boost Visitor Visa allows parents of New Zealand residents and citizens to stay in New Zealand for up to five years continuously, with the option to renew for an additional five years, offering a total possible stay of up to 10 years.

Parent Boost Visitor Visa Requirements

To be eligible for the Parent Boost Visitor Visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Sponsorship and Income Thresholds

Applicants must be sponsored by their adult child living in New Zealand who meets the following minimum income thresholds:

  • $69,805 per year (or $33.56/hour) to sponsor one parent
  • $104,707 per year (individually or jointly with a partner) to sponsor one parent
  • $139,610 per year (jointly) to sponsor both parents

Alternative to Income: Financial Evidence

If the sponsor does not meet the income requirement, parents can instead provide evidence of:

  • $160,000 in savings for one parent
  • $250,000 in savings for two parents (a couple)

Retirement Income Option

Alternatively, proof of a guaranteed lifetime retirement income may be accepted.

Health Insurance Requirement

Parents must have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical emergencies and cancer treatment for the first 12 months. They must also commit in writing to maintaining this insurance for the duration of their stay.

Applications open from 29 September 2025.

Parent Boost Visa Medical Requirements: The Real Hurdle

While many prospective applicants focus on the cost of health insurance or meeting the income threshold, the most common reason for Parent Boost Visitor Visa decline is failure to meet Immigration New Zealand’s Acceptable Standard of Health (ASH).

Based on historical data from the three-year Parent/Grandparent Visitor Visa category, approximately 16% of applications are declined, largely due to health concerns.

Even if applicants have full insurance, Immigration New Zealand may refuse a visa if a parent is:

  • Likely to be a danger to public health
  • Likely to impose significant costs or demand on New Zealand’s health services

There is likely no medical waiver provision under the Parent Boost Visitor Visa category.

Two Health Assessments Required

Applicants must complete the following medical checks:

  • Before submitting the visa application – A general medical and chest X-ray certificate
  • After three years – A second medical examination is required to renew the visa (must be completed offshore)

If a parent’s health deteriorates between assessments, they may not be eligible to return to New Zealand—even after having lived here for three years.

Tips to Strengthen Your Parent Boost Visitor Visa Application

  • Get a medical check-up before applying – This allows early detection of any health issues that might lead to visa refusal.
  • Choose the principal applicant strategically – In a couple, list the healthier parent as the principal applicant. If one is declined, the other may still proceed.
  • Apply early – The longer you wait, the higher the risk that age-related health issues may affect eligibility.
